Cabin Progress

In July of 2005 we started excavating a spot to place our cabin on our newly purchased land in Bedford County Pennsylvania. We bought approximately 38 acres for hunting and fishing and need a place to stay. We hired a local guy to do the digging for us. In June of 2006 we finally started to build, it has been a slow process, but it will be well worth it in the end. I will try to keep the site updated with our progress.

In June Derrick brought up the Skid Steer to remove loose soil and rock that came down since the first excavation. The same day we decided to rent a power auger to drill the holes for the foundation. Thanks to Nate and Derrick we finally got started.

At the end of June 2006 we started to set the 6" x 6" foundation posts. We poured a lot of concrete over the next two weeks if it wasn't for Shirky , Nate and Jesse it would have been a whole summer job.

On July 8th 2006 Dad and I went up to start setting the 2" X 12 main beams.

On the weekend of September 8th 2006 we started to do the floor joist and sheeting. Me, Dad, Shirky, Chad, Nate, and Derrick did the entire floor in about 5 hours. I never expected it to go that fast. The only real pain was crossing the bridge to get to our lane. We thought the truck weight with trailer and materials was heavier than 3 tons so we improvised and set the 20 ft floor joist on the top of Derricks truck.

On Saturday September 16th Shirky and I went up to start framing the exterior walls I filled my Dads truck up with as many studs as I could we got 3/4 of the walls done by ourselves in about 4 hours but I forgot my camera so the pictures will have to wait.

On Saturday October 14th Shirky my Dad and I went up to finish framing and finally put up the T111 on the exterior walls. We bit off a little more than normal with only 3 people but we got as much done as we could. I am going to order the roof trusses this week hopefully I can get some help when they come in. I am planning to install them as soon as we can.

November 4th 2006, We finally have the roof trusses in place it went a little easier than I thought. The hardest part was unloading the trusses and tying them to Derricks truck that 3 ton weight limit bridge is a bitch. The sheeting of the roof was the biggest pain to do. I think we are going to go with a rubber roof. We got it done in only 6 hours.

November 19th 2006, We finally got the windows and front door in but the patio door was too heavy to install with just too people. Since know one was available to help me this weekend my mom came at the last minute. We are still hoping to stay in the cabin for the first day of buck season.  Thanks to Nasty Nate we got a great deal on the windows and doors.

November 26th 2006, Our first time at camp. We finally got the wood stove in just in time for a cold night. It worked pretty well even with no insulation in the camp. Chad also got the gas lights installed. We temporally put the Biolet in the middle of the cabin until we frame out the bathroom. Also got some of the wires run in the main room. Can't wait to insulate and finish the roof.
